Our Relationship with Tobacco Must Change
Plants are misunderstood and I feel our misinterpretations, often assumptions, create great suffering where unbelievable healing might rather occur.
The misuse and abuse of tobacco are some of the leading causes of death and chronic illness yet tobacco as a healing agent is many times a cure. Tobacco carries huge medicine to relieve suffering. I pray that the voices of the wind continue to spread this truth, in that a seemingly evil deity in all actuality is a superpower ready to assist in the empowerment of our entire species. I can attest that there is so much love inside this beautiful and wise plant.
Like any intelligent being, tobacco prefers for people to request permission from him before indulging in his aid. What brings him joy is what any human would also crave; to be witnessed, respected, and carefully integrated into our lives in a mutualy beneficial way. We can all learn a lot from an intentional relationship with grandfather tobacco.
I have witnessed many miracles since initiation and study with Jeff Firewalker and Prajna Ginty. Both authentically trained tabaquero's with notable initiations and experiences have come together to train small groups in North Carolina. They essentially opened the door for a few folks to be carriers of grandfather tobacco’s medicine and shared profound healing techniques, rituals, and ceremonies. Ultimately, not everyone becomes an official tabaquero. It is up to the participants to live a life of integrity with all plants and life or simply not resonate with this one pure and powerful bodhisattva.
Because of trauma, my relationship with plants has been strained much of my life just like my human relationships. By learning to work with tobacco I learned so much about relationships in general.
It is imperative we structure all of our relationships to ones of deep respect, reverence, and equal reciprocity.
As a plant medicine practitioner I share a few tips to transform your relationship with tobacco:
1. When you feel the urge to smoke consider the trigger. This is important to understand what kind of life changes to consider to create more ease, peace, and pain relief. Often we make up excuses about what can be done but we always have opportunities to change.
2. Use the opposite hand to smoke or vape but be patient. Ask permission and wait for an answer. The response is often subtle and takes time to recognize. Muscle testing and checking in with how your body feels might help.
3. Sing grandfather Tobacco a song or play an instrument in his honor as a gift before you take part. Give as much, if not more, than you enjoy. All of nature works in this same way. If you are having trouble with manifestation you might consider giving more.
4. Also before you indulge, ask Tobacco for the specific support you need. He is super intelligent and can respond in many different ways. Without intention or request ... the magic is often used to your detriment by expanding upon your naturally awful thinking which triggered a binge in the first place.
5. Let go of distraction while working with him. Give him your full attention. If you are asking for help be sure to rest in silence often throughout your day and take note of your dreams where he may visit. When working with a master plant they will give you the guidance you need to heal yourself entirely in addition to symptom relief. Don’t miss the message. If your resistance is high you will simply continue to repress the inconvenient truths presented.
